PROJECT: “O ROMAÑO” CIVIC CENTER. SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA

Surrounded by little houses and a green landscape, the new civic centre of O Romaño –in Santiago de Compostela, close to our atelier– rises up like a compact and sober piece which adapts to the scale of the place. Two of our lamp designs, V and Fluo, light its spaces, projected to highlight the cultural and social encounter.

PROJECT: ‘ORIGEN’ RESTAURANT. BILBAO

Air, earth, water and fire. The four elements shape Origen restaurant in Bilbao inviting the visitor to live a unique experience where all the senses are involved. Our lighting designs light up this culinary spectacle, which fuses Latin, Basque and Japanese food in a forward-looking and sophisticated setting.

SAINT JOHN: LIGHT, TRADITION AND COMMUNITY

Every year we look forward to the 23 June to join a celebration very much related to our environment and roots: St. John’s Night. We party with our neighbors on the bank of Ulla river in Berres, very close to our atelier. This place, in which nature feels wild and free and embraces us in its green wealth, becomes the stage of a ritual made up of light and fire which welcomes the summer solstice.

HELLO USA!

We have just arrived from Milan, where we lived an unforgettable experience at Euroluce, and we are already preparing a new trip. This time we are crossing the Atlantic to participate in three major design appointments in the USA: HD Expo in Las Vegas, ICFF in New York and NeoCon in Chicago

The subtle charm of Ura, the mysterious world of Pili and the marine inspiration of Onn collection will glow in these exhibitions. Ballet chandelier, recognized by Interior Design magazine with a Best of Year Award 2016 will surprise with its constant dance of lights and shadow. All of them are handmade in our atelier in Spain to create emotions through the use of light.

SPANISH DESIGN MAKES HISTORY IN MILAN WITH ARTURO ÁLVAREZ

23 years ago, a curious and creative young man started a new path having no idea where it was leading. He did it without fear, with courage and a great work capacity. Today Arturo Álvarez is an internationally renowned designer, who has received important awards which distinguish him as one of the best Spanish designers of his time. Like in any other journey, he faced many difficulties and challenges. As he was overcoming them, with inventiveness and positivity, he was growing professionally and evolving as a creator. Even in his beginnings he showed promise to become a prominent figure. When he started to design his first lighting, he created a new style within the Tiffany lamps which revolutionized the market and fostered his quick rise, making a name for himself in the world of design. He was the first to use a single color and simplify the conceptual design of lamps made with the Tiffany technique. At that time, an elderly man who had the chance to see his first lighting, predicted: “these are the kind of pieces that will be sought by collectors in 100 years.”

With the Salone del Mobile Milano fast approaching, Architonic, the renowned international site for architectural and design products, has just launched the new Top 100 Designers ranking, “the premier league of creative minds that shape the design world today”. Arturo Álvarez is no.17 on the list, improving the no.22 position achieved last year. He is also the no.1 among the designers with practice in Spain.

INNOVATIVE MATERIALS, UNIQUE SHAPES

The emotion which arises from our lighting has much to do with the materials employed. Arturo Álvarez seeks on them a way to shape light and create new languages to express experiences and feelings. Through exploration and decontextualization of quotidian elements he achieves new and surprising uses, and his own materials, such as SIMETECH®. The different textures and characteristics allow light to express itself through brightness, chiaroscuro and different levels of intensity. Organic, geometric and even whimsical shapes emerge from this experimentation in the new 2017 collections.

HANDMADE: THIS IS HOW WE CRAFT OUR MUU COLLECTION

It is often that arturo alvarez’s collections are inspired in the natural rural environment that surrounds the atelier. These handmade table lamps made of SIMETECH® take their forms from the animals with which country people work.

To craft it we start from a stainless-steel metal mesh rectangular strip. We draw thin lines by hand which will help us as a guide to shape the lamp, and then we micro weld the interior of the volume. After that we apply a silicone coating.
